What the heck is Yoga anyway?

Yoga is a physical practice with physiological benefits, emotional and spiritual. It involves stretching, breathing, building incredible strength in your body and developing equanimity in your mind-and sometimes may involve sitting still and standing on your head! The word yoga means literally ‘ union ‘ or yoking of opposites. Yoga will empower you to bring balance into your life.

Whatever level you are in your yoga practice, each day you do yoga is different than the last. And a plethora of benefits also is dynamic. Yes, you will receive in great shape: building lean muscle tone of the whole range of movements involved in yoga, increasing your metabolism, so you burn more fat and slimming down for a weight that is natural to your frame, increasing flexibility and cultivating a strong, soft spine. But more importantly, with a regular practice of Yoga you can develop a deep relationship and compassionate to yourself-a relationship that will not be tenuous, or at the mercy of unavoidable ebb and flow of positive events in your life.

So, how does Yoga connect myself? There are many things happening simultaneously when you practice yoga. Let’s look at them individually for a moment.

On a physical level, a yoga class consists of a series of postures (asanas) that you move to, hold and leaves it at the same time maintain a deep, calm, continuous breathing. The integration of rhythmic breathing and movement is key to move deeply into your body and your experience and getting the benefits of yoga.

What’s happening on my body when I do yoga? Physically postures strengthen muscles, increase and stretch your spine and increase total flexibility in your body.

At a physiological level, this allows your body to release tension, muscle, muscle, which is stored in the body of contrast that you find in your everyday life. Psychologically, as you do your yoga practice daily you generate a sense of confidence and competence in itself. You begin to believe in your abilities. Instead of folding and saying “Oh, I can’t do that”, you stay with posture and securely and controlled you explore it. Deep breathing can create a feeling of euphoria and well-being at the same time will fuel cells of your body so that you can make the physical work of stretching, keeping and openness in your practice. Psychologically and spiritually a long and deep calm breathing acts as a continuous thread, unbreakable that weaves through his practice, his day, his life-no matter what’s happening in your world. Life events, emotional fluctuations or interpersonal, happiness and sadness, disappointment and euphoria, joyful surprise and despair-life moves past you as a tapestry endless being woven in front of your eyes. Instead of being tossed powerless by each event – up and down, and back as a float on an ocean raging-his breath: length, continuous and calm keeps your mind and calm your body fed so you can experience your life instead of being victim of their events. Your breathing creates a binding that enables your eternal spirit, that part of you that sees everything and knows everything what is truly well in your world, prosper no matter what life offers you the same.

So – what happens when you gather these postures and breathing? A yoga class happens. You can do yoga alone or with a class. When you start you might feel scared or worried, “and if I can’t do that?” There is nothing to be done “. You practice yoga to explore the same, strengthen your body and soothe your mind. If someone is more flexible than you is all that means is that they have to go further to find sensation. And the same goes for everyone–we all get to breathe, place of feeling and playing with the creation of an area, moving a little deeper, realizing that feelings and thoughts that we found in this place and enjoying the feeling of being fully in line with our bodies, breath and spirit.

If you choose to participate in a yoga class in a Studio make sure that you feel comfortable in space and that the instructor is knowledgeable and caring. Enjoy your practice!
